Remember, if you do not currently follow us, please start, and encourage your customers to follow us, as well. We need your support in getting our story out to the industry.
We want to thank our retiring Board of Trustees, whose terms expire May 31, for their service: Bob Daly, Kaw Roofing & Sheet Metal Inc., Kansas City, Kan.; Chris Salazar, Karnak Corp., Clark, N.J.; and David Workman, RoofConnect, Sheridan, Ark. As we move forward with a new fiscal year, we are looking for members to serve on our Roofing Alliance committees and task forces. Click here to see a list of committees and task forces with a brief description of the objectives, and let either of us or Bennett know whether there are specific ones that interest you.

We are saddened to report the passing of two well-known industry leaders. Fred Good, former NRCA executive vice president and J.A. Piper Award recipient, passed away May 18 after a brave battle with cancer.

Good was NRCA’s executive vice president from 1957 to 1989. When he started at NRCA, the NRCA staff consisted of Good and a part-time secretary; the association had 300 members and a budget less than $100,000; and annual convention attendance was about 500 with 70 booths. Good also was instrumental in forming the National Roofing Foundation when it was incorporated in 1970.

He is survived by his wife Dorothy; sons Bill and Carl; daughters Sue and Sally; stepdaughters Joan Bauer, Barb Dwyer and Karen Baehler; stepsons Robert Deist, John Deist, Thomas Deist and William Deist; as well as 22 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren. Click here for more information.

Additionally, Roofing Alliance member and J.A. Piper Award recipient Rene Dupuis, Structural Research Inc., Middleton, Wis., passed away May 23 from heart failure. Because we just learned of Dupuis’ passing, details are limited at this time.

In closing, I want to say serving as President of the Roofing Alliance has been a tremendous experience. My tenure in this leadership role would not have been productive without Rod Petrick’s contribution as the past president and Bennett Judson’s help throughout the year. I’m grateful for their support and prudent advice.

The year went by quickly, and by working together, we accomplished a lot. As a result, 100% of the Ronald McDonald houses throughout the U.S. now are aligned with at least one local Roofing Alliance or NRCA member to support their roofing needs. Clemson University created and deployed the first college-level full credit course dedicated exclusively to roofing. The branding team increased website traffic by 45%, and we added seven new Roofing Alliance members, further strengthening the foundation.

As the foundation prepares to celebrate its 25th anniversary, we are positioned for great success. I’m especially optimistic about our future with Kyle Thomas taking office as your new president. Kyle is a progressive thinker with deep roots in the roofing industry. His commitment to the Roofing Alliance mission is evident in his leadership of the construction management schools competition and his engagement in Roofing Alliance committee work and with NRCA’s board of directors.

Amid the current alphabet soup of economic rebound curve shapes and other visions of the future, the most inspiring message is the universal optimism in our industry that we will beat COVID-19 and recovery will come quickly. As we work together toward this goal, I hope there will be more opportunities to gather and exchange ideas in person. I was hoping to see everyone in Florida, and, of course, to enjoy the greatest benefit of Roofing Alliance membership—the opportunity to learn from industry leaders. Although I won’t have the opportunity to thank you in person, please know I’m grateful for your support during the year.

As we prepare for the Roofing Alliance’s leadership transition, I am committed to remaining engaged and to supporting Kyle, Dave and Jason this year, though we all know the real support will come from the Roofing Alliance members who give back through their participation and, of course, from Bennett. Thank you.
Stay safe, healthy and strong!
