After reaching out to the Wilson County sheriff with an offer to help repair the church, Beldon was told the church was “virtually destroyed.” Beldon then immediately decided to raise money to build a new church, teaming up with other San Antonio business leaders to make it happen.
Since then, Beldon has been calling everyone he knows, and no one has turned him down. He so far has raised more than $1.1 million through a GoFundMe page called Rebuilding Sutherland Springs.
On the GoFundMe page, Beldon wrote: “Although we are a town of over a million people, we still live by the small town principles—we are all friends here in South Texas. There are three places of sanctuary in Texas—Police & Fire Stations, Friday Night Football games, and our places of worship. One of these was taken from us this past week. Please help our friends take it back.
“Unfortunately, we cannot rewrite history, but we can make a difference one day at a time, one person at a time. After visiting with the Sheriff Joe Tackitt and Pastor Collins, I decided to TEAM up with some friends in our business community and our goal is to provide the First Baptist Church of Sutherland Springs with a new home. We cannot erase the horrific memories but we can provide a place of worship, a place of hope, a place of healing, and a place of prayer for our fellow human beings.”
Beldon is directing the funds raised through GoFundMe to Rebuilding Sutherland Springs, a registered nonprofit he established for the project. Frost Bank is helping to manage the project by establishing an account for the funds. Additionally, Marmon Mok Architecture has agreed to help design the new church, which will be a collaborative effort with the Sutherland Springs community, according to therivardreport.com.
“I don’t know how you go on, but we’re going to give them a facility for hope for them,” Beldon says. “Nobody will ever be forgotten. The 26 victims will never be forgotten, ever. We’re going to make sure of that.”
