New Alliance Members
The momentum continues as we welcome two new Alliance members — Rene Dupuis, Structural Research Inc., Middleton, Wis., as a Service Provider-level member and Brian Partyka, Drexel Metals Inc., Levittown, Pa., as a Regent-level member. We hope you’ll welcome Rene and Brian the next time you see them.
Alliance Construction Management Schools Initiative
I am pleased to advise that all six teams have been invited to come to Las Vegas to give oral presentations on Thursday, March 2. After reviewing and scoring the teams’ written proposals, the judges believed all six teams did a nice job. Part of our goal with the student competition is to expose more construction management students to our industry. We believe bringing them to the International Roofing Expo® (IRE) provides a great opportunity for that. Not only will they engage with our industry-expert judges at the oral presentations, but they also will have an opportunity to go on a rooftop visit of the T-Mobile Arena, visit Deilco Crane Co. and, of course, spend time on the show floor learning about roof systems, products, materials and equipment.
You’ll have a chance to meet and welcome the students at the Alliance Member Reception on the evening of Tuesday, Feb. 28. And we want to encourage our members to attend the oral presentations, which will take place Thursday, March 2 from 7:45 to 11:15 a.m. at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center. We realize you may want to attend other conference sessions, but if you can try to stop in for a portion of the competition, that would be great. We’ll email members a schedule with specific team presentation times in a few weeks. We also hope you will join us at NRCA’s Industry Awards Ceremony and Cocktail Reception March 2 where the winning team will be announced.
If any of our members who are exhibiting at the IRE would like the teams to stop by their booths for a brief overview of their companies or if any of our manufacturer members would like to contribute small giveaway items for the students’ registration bags, please contact Bennett Judson.
Alliance Member Reception
Invitations to the Alliance member reception in Las Vegas were sent in January. The reception is scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 28, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Four Seasons Las Vegas in the Mesquite Ballroom (2nd floor). The Four Seasons is conveniently located in the Mandalay Bay Hotel complex. Our student competition participants will be attending, so Alliance members will have an opportunity to meet and welcome them. We’d also like to encourage you to bring a prospective Alliance member. The reception is a great way for them to meet Alliance members in an informal, relaxed setting. If you did not receive an invitation, please let Bennett know. Otherwise, please be sure to return your response form by Friday, Jan. 28.
We want to congratulate our eight winners and 10 finalists, who have all now been notified. Our winners will be coming to Las Vegas where they will be recognized at NRCA’s Industry Awards Cermony and Cocktail Reception on Thursday, March 2. Immediately following the recognition of our winners, the winner of the Best of the Best award will be announced.

We want to not only congratulate the winners and finalists but to thank all our member companies who supported the MVP program this year by submitting nominations. As of this year’s program, 608 employees have been nominated for the MVP Awards Program since the program’s inception. And 227 winners and finalists have been selected during that time. So, as you can see, our program has touched a lot of lives. The program is a great way to recognize our workers who may not typically be publicly acknowledged or may not be eligible for our companies’ incentive programs. It’s a rewarding experience, especially for the winners. They are so proud to come to convention and be publicly recognized. And many share the experience with their spouses, who are equally proud.
The deadline for the 2017-18 Melvin Kruger Endowed Scholarship is almost upon us. There’s still a brief period of time to share information with your employees and have them apply. The deadline for applications is Jan. 31. Details and an application form can be found on the Alliance website.
April Alliance Meeting
Information for the April 20-22 Alliance Member Meeting was emailed out. If you did not receive the information, click here or let Bennett know. The deadline for response forms is Friday, March 10.
We have a great meeting lined up. We’ll review the proposed budget for 2017-18; our board of trustees will consider funding requests; we’ll have program/project updates; we will hear from two speakers—the Honorable Alberto Gonzalez and Howard Wasdin; and we’ll spend time in facilitated breakout discussions led by Karen Cates as we begin our next 20 years, we want to look at where we want the Alliance to be, identify topics and industry issues for future funding requests and for construction management faculty research topics and look at we can better solicit proposals appropriate for Alliance funding. Information to help us prepare for the discussions will be mailed out before the meeting.
In addition to the business at hand, we’ll have several opportunities to relax with other members, spouses and guests at the member reception Thursday evening and the dinner cruise Friday evening.
We’ll also help coordinate a trip to the San Diego Zoo for spouses who may be interested.
As we prepare for the April member meeting, we want to make sure everyone understands the criteria, guidelines and format for submitting requests for Alliance funding consideration. Visit the Alliance website for the details and an outline of the funding request procedure. Requests are due by March 1.
Alliance Member Development and Fundraising Update
The Alliance will have a strong presence at the 2017 IRE in Las Vegas — a booth in NRCA’s booth, No. 1741; the Alliance member reception; the Construction Management Student Competition; and the Industry Awards Ceremony and Cocktail Reception, where we’ll recognize the winning competition team and the MVP winners. We hope you’ll show your support by attending many of these events, if not all.
As always, we want to thank all Alliance members for their continued support. Our ability to fulfill the Alliance’s mission statement rests solely with our membership ( current members and new members), and your continued commitment will help us meet those goals.
As we close, we want to share some very sad news. We received word that William T. “Billy” Fort Jr., Fort Roofing and Sheet Metal Works, Inc. Sumter, S.C. passed away Jan. 14 as a result of complications following a short battle with liver cancer. Billy joined the Alliance in 1996 as a Charter Governor member. In addition to serving as NRCA chairman of the board from 1989-90, he also served on the National Roofing Foundation Steering Committee from 1996-98. Our condolences go out to his family — his wife, Jayne, and his three sons, Will (former Alliance president), Jefferson Fort and Andrew.
Feel free to contact either of us or Bennett Judson if you have questions or comments regarding any items in this update. And remember to let us know if you have any prospective members our Alliance team can visit. We look forward to seeing you in Las Vegas!
