How a National Student Roofing Competition Helps Advance the Roofing Industry Part 1

The Roofing Alliance, the Foundation of the National Roofing Contractors Association (NRCA), is a membership organization and endowment fund committed to several forward-thinking industry initiatives. The goal of each of these initiatives is to enhance the long-term viability and attractiveness of the industry to roofing professionals and students alike.

One of the Roofing Alliance’s main objectives is to allocate funding for education initiatives. This includes financially supporting research programs and roofing industry studies, providing mentorship and scholarship opportunities to several educational programs across the nation, and hosting an annual Construction Management Student Competition that features outstanding undergraduate students from several distinguished universities.

In this three-part article, the members of the Roofing Alliance will discuss several reasons why a national student competition advances the roofing industry as a whole. In this part, we will discuss the brief history of the competition. In part two, we will discuss the process that the students undergo in this competition and how this competition enhances learning and industry knowledge. In the final part, we will feature other benefits that the competition provides. What is the Roofing Alliance’s Construction Management Student Competition?

Established in 2014, the Roofing Alliance’s Construction Management Competition is a hallmark competition that partners the roofing industry with respected universities. The competition was created as a way to provide students with a hands-on opportunity to enhance their roofing knowledge, project management skills, and presentation skills. Held in conjunction with the NRCA’s Annual Convention and the International Roofing Expo (IRE), the event is also a tremendous networking opportunity for students, contractors, architects, engineers, and other roofing professionals attending the event.

A Brief Timeline of Each Competition

Here is a brief timeline of the competition over the years:

  • Established in 2014-2015, the inaugural Roofing Alliance’s Construction Management Competition featured three top construction management schools and was hosted in New Orleans during the largest (IRE) in the previous 15 years.
  • In 2015-2016, the competition again featured three of the best programs in the country. Hosted in Orlando, these students were tasked with submitting a qualified bid package for installing a roof system on the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, FL.
  • In 2016-2017, the competition doubled in size, featuring six programs. Hosted in Las Vegas, the third competition required the teams to submit a bid package for installing a roof system on the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
  • In 2017-2018, the competition increased to seven teams and returned to New Orleans. In the fourth competition, the teams submitted a bid for installing a roof system on the Audubon Aquarium of the Americas in New Orleans.
  • In 2018-2019, the competition increased to 12 teams featuring six new schools competing in Nashville. The teams were tasked with bidding on and installing a new roof system on the Hilton Franklin Cool Springs Hotel.
