Construction Management Schools Initiative

The Construction Management Schools Initiative Committee met in November and discussed the on-site details for the 2019-20 Construction Management Student Competition. The finalist competition teams will be attending the Roofing Alliance member reception; a job-site visit of the Ford Center, the indoor practice facility of the Dallas Cowboys, which is part of the Dallas Cowboys World Headquarters in Frisco, Texas; participating in an “Expo Run,” which will connect the teams with some exhibiting Roofing Alliance members; and giving their oral presentations Wednesday, Feb. 5, from 7:45-11:30 a.m. at the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center.

We are asking our Roofing Alliance members to support the competition by attending the oral presentations. As you register for the International Roofing Expo® in Dallas, be sure to register for the student competition. When the finalist teams arrive in Dallas, they will select their presentation times. Once they do, we will send an announcement through social media regarding team presentation times so you can plan to attend and support your favorite team.

The written proposals for the eight teams were due Dec. 9. Our judges are reviewing and scoring them. The teams will be notified in early January if they qualify as a finalist team. We would like to take this opportunity to thank this year’s judges:

David Adams, vice president, National Roofing Partners, Coppell, Texas
Chris Evans, chief estimator department manager, KPost Roofing & Waterproofing, Dallas
John Geary, chief marketing officer, Nations Roof, Mobile, Ala.
Helene Hardy-Pierce, vice president of technical services, codes and industry relations, GAF, Parsippany, N.J.
Scott Kawulok, vice president, B & M Roofing, Frederick, Colo.
Chad Lesher, president, CSL Materials LLC, Frisco, Texas
J. Dudley Miles, Chairman of the Board, J. D. Miles & Sons Inc., Virginia Beach, Va.
Bob Pringle, vice president, Evans Roofing Company Inc., Elmira, N.Y.
John Yuko, senior vice-president of operations, GSM Roofing, Ephrata, Pa.

Another component of our Construction Management Schools Initiative is faculty research. Many of you were at the Nov. 15 meeting and heard the Arizona State University research team’s update regarding A Study of the U.S. Roofing Industry and Its Workforce. They are putting the finishing touches on the final report. Once it is ready for distribution, each Roofing Alliance voting representative will receive one complimentary copy. Additional copies will be available to Roofing Alliance members at a discounted price. The Finance and Financial Development Committee and the Board of Trustees are holding a conference call to determine the selling prices for NRCA members and others. We will share the details once they have been finalized. There will be an article regarding the study in the February issue of Professional Roofing magazine, and the final report will be available before the 2020 IRE in Dallas.
