The Roofing Industry Alliance for Progress selected a team from University of Florida, Gainesville, as the winner of its third student construction management competition, which took place during NRCA’s 130th Annual Convention Feb. 27-March 3 in Las Vegas.
Members of the winning team were Caleb Stauss (team captain), William Foster, Schaffer Weeks and Forrest Wilson.
Six construction management schools participated in the competition: McWhorter School of Building Science at Auburn University, Auburn, Ala.; Colorado State University, Fort Collins; Texas A&M University, College Station; Tuskegee University, Tuskegee, Ala.; University of Cincinnati, Cincinnati; and M.E. Rinker, Sr. School of Construction Management at University of Florida, Gainesville. The goal of the partnership is to raise awareness of the roofing industry by developing roofing-related curriculum that can be incorporated into existing construction management undergraduate degree programs; exploring scholarship programs for students and faculty members; and developing an internship program with interested Alliance members.
Teams from each school were presented with a problem statement—they were asked to bid on a roof system installation on the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Each team had to research the project, review the plans and specifications, and assemble a full estimate proposal to submit a qualified bid package. Each team gave oral presentations March 2 at NRCA’s convention.
The winning team received a team trophy and a $5,000 L.B. Conway scholarship for its school, as well as individual team member trophies that were presented during NRCA’s Industry Awards Ceremony and Cocktail Reception March 2.
