The Qualities of a Most Valuable Player in Roofing

The Roofing Alliance, the Foundation of the National Roofing Contractors Association (NRCA), celebrates excellence in the roofing industry. As a national organization committed to strengthening the future of the industry, our members are involved in a variety of programs, partnerships, and philanthropic endeavors that improve communities.

One such program is the Roofing Alliance’s Most Valuable Player (MVP) Awards. In this brief article, members of the Roofing Alliance will discuss several core values that recipients of this award possess, including excellence in their position, leadership on the jobsite, and their outstanding efforts providing community service in the roofing industry.

Excellence in Roofing

The qualities of an MVP Award winner begin with their excellent performance in a roofing-related position. Employees that are diligent, resourceful, and effective leaders are great candidates for this honor. Moreover, MVP candidates have a positive impact on their workplace and offer support for their team. The employee is a safety role model for their company and is always willing to go above and beyond to ensure tasks are performed to the highest possible quality.

Extending a Helping Hand

Although showcasing excellent leadership attributes and performing work at a high level are extremely important qualities for an MVP candidate, this award also celebrates roofing professionals that are committed to philanthropic acts away from the jobsite. Some qualities for contributions outside the workplace include: exemplary service, leadership, commitment, and selfless devotion. Past winners of the award have worked with nonprofits, volunteered, or even developed their own charity programs to support their local communities.

An Example of Excellence

In 2018, one MVP winner, Alan Baird of Core Contractors Inc. in Denver, also received Professional Roofing and OMG Roofing Products’ annual Best of the Best award, an honor that celebrates the “best” MVP winner. Baird, a lead foreman, teaches proper safety procedures, resolves issues with clients, and displays excellent leadership traits that inspire the rest of the members of the company. In fact, Baird’s professionalism is so valued that the company created several “core values” that define the traits of the company’s best people. According to Andrew Schmidt, a partner with Core Contractors, “Each of our six values has a nuance, and at least three of them were developed as a result of Alan. He has become part of the fabric of our company.”

Baird’s contributions go well beyond the jobsite. This lead foreman spends his personal time designing seatbelts, creating security plans for schools, and has established his own nonprofit, Baird Survival Bags. This is a volunteer initiative that provides the homeless with several useful resources within a survival kit including a “small tent, new coat, gloves, hat, blanket and other essential living supplies.”

Whether it’s working on roofing systems or helping out in the community, the Roofing Alliance is committed to advancing the roofing industry.
