Alliance Construction Management Schools Initiative
Alliance 2016-2017 Construction Management Student Competition
Our six student teams were excited to receive the news that they are invited to come to Las Vegas to give their oral presentations Thursday, March 2 from 7:45 – 11:15 a.m. at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center, North Hall, Islander I. We realize the competition will be held during two of the International Roofing Expo® (IRE) conference session periods, so here are the times the specific schools will be presenting. If you can’t stay for the entire presentation time, we’d like to encourage you to at least stop in to listen to several of the presentations.
Following is the presentation schedule:
8 – 8:15 a.m. — Auburn University
8:30 – 8:45 a.m. — Colorado State University
9 – 9:15 a.m. — Louisiana State University
9:30 – 9:45 a.m. — Tuskegee University
10 – 10:15 a.m. — University of Cincinnati
10:30 – 10:45 a.m. — University of Florida
Before their presentations Thursday, the students have two site visits scheduled. Tuesday afternoon, they’ll go on a rooftop visit of the T-Mobile Arena. Wednesday morning, they will visit Deilco Crane Company to hear about the various types of cranes used for the T-Mobile Arena project; the reach of the cranes and the capacity; and will see several crane demonstrations.
In addition to the site visits and presentations, our students will be attending the expo. We want to thank Johns Manville, SRS Distribution and and Soprema for scheduling times to talk with the students in their booths. And we thank ABC for providing chargers and Beacon Roofing Supply for providing hats for the students’ backpacks.
Alliance Member Reception
If you haven’t returned your RSVP for the Alliance Member Reception in Las Vegas, please do so. The reception is scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 28, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Four Seasons Las Vegas in a NEW LOCATION — the ACACIA FOYER (also on the 2nd floor). The Four Seasons is conveniently located in the Mandalay Bay Hotel complex.
We have several guests attending — our competition students, as well as several prospective members: Gary Kerley, Crane Renovations Group; Nick Sabino, Deer Park Roofing; Nick Serellis, FCS; Zach Hath and Scott Baker, National Nail; Mike Growl, Patuxent Roofing; Bill Breaden, Servco; and Dale Tadlock, Tadlock Roofing. We encourage you to reach out and welcome them during the evening. The prospective company guests will have “Guest” on their name badges. If you did not respond, there’s still time. Click here for a copy of the response form — and return your response as soon as possible.
2016-17 Most Valuable Player (MVP) Awards Program
Just a reminder that our eight MVP winners will be recognized at NRCA’s Industry Awards Cermony and Cocktail Reception Thursday, March 2. Immediately following the recognition of our winners, the winner of the Best of the Best award will be announced. All our winners and many of their familes will be in attendance. We hope you plan to attend the ceremony and take a few minutes to congratulate our winners.
The deadline for the 2017-18 Melvin Kruger Endowed Scholarship was Jan. 31. We received 40 applications compared with 50 received for last year’s program. The Alliance Scholarship committee will be reviewing the applications and making recommendations to the Alliance Board of Trustees at their April meeting in California for renewed and new scholarship awards. Information for the 2018-19 scholarship program will be available in late summer 2017.
April Alliance Meeting
We’re starting to receive responses for the April 20-22 Alliance Member Meeting at the Hotel Del Coronado in Coronado, Calif. If you have not responded, we encourage you to do so because hotel rooms will fill up quickly. The deadline for response forms is Friday, March 10. If you did not receive the information, click here or let Bennett know.
We believe we have a great meeting lined up. We’ll review the proposed budget for 2017-18; our board of trustees will consider funding requests; we’ll have program/project updates; we will hear from two speakers — the Honorable Alberto Gonzalez and Howard Wasdin; and we’ll spend time in facilitated breakout discussions led by Karen Cates as we begin our next 20 years — looking at where we want the Alliance to be, identifying topics/industry issues for future funding requests for construction management faculty research program topics, as well as how to solicit a proposal appropriate for Alliance funding. Information to help us prepare for the discussions will be mailed out before the meeting.
In addition to the business at hand, we’ll have several opportunities to relax with other members, spouses and guests at the member reception Thursday evening and the dinner cruise Friday evening. We’ll also help coordinate a trip to the San Diego Zoo for spouses who may be interested.
Alliance Committees and Funding Requests
As we prepare for our next fiscal year (starting June 1), we’d like to know whether there are members interested in serving on Alliance committees. If committees fill up, we will keep your names on file for future opportunities. Click here for a list of Alliance committees, terms of service and objectives or let Bennett know.
In preparation for the April member meeting, we want to make sure everyone understands the criteria, guidelines and format for submitting requests for Alliance funding consideration. Visit the Alliance website for details and an outline of the funding request procedure. Requests are due by March 1.
Alliance Member Development and Fundraising Update
If you have time, be sure to stop by the Alliance counter in NRCA’s booth, No. 1741, during the IRE. In addition, we hope you’ll plan to attend the Construction Management Student Competition and the NRCA Industry Awards Ceremony and Cocktail Reception, where we’ll recognize the winning competition team and MVP winners.
Feel free to contact either of us or Bennett Judson if you have questions or comments regarding any items in this update. And remember to let us know if you have any prospective members our Alliance team can visit. We look forward to seeing you in Las Vegas!
