How the Roofing Industry Can Combat the Labor Shortage Issue Part 3

Whether you work as a roofing contractor, supplier, manufacturer, or in any other profession within the roofing industry, you must always be mindful of ways you can successfully grow your business. In this four-part article, we are discussing effective ways that roofing businesses can take on one of the most pressing issues in the industry — the skilled labor shortage.

In the first part, we presented several of the challenges that face the roofing industry. In the second part, we offered some solutions to roofing companies on ways they can recruit, train, and retain the next generation of talented roofing professionals. In this part and the final part, we will shift our focus to several programs and initiatives that the Roofing Alliance has established that are committed to the future of the roofing industry. This includes providing the next generation of talented professionals with roofing industry scholarships that can help them further their roofing education and strengthen our future workforce.

Melvin Kruger Endowed Scholarship Program

Roofing professionals that excel in their position deserve the opportunity to further their roofing education and advance their career. Administered by Scholarship America, the Melvin Kruger Endowed Scholarship Program provides employees of members of the NRCA, this includes roofing contractors, manufacturers and suppliers and their families, with the opportunity to pursue a post-secondary education at a college or vocational program. Former scholarship recipients have focused in the following areas of study:

  • Architecture
  • Business Management
  • Civil, Mechanical, Structural Engineering
  • Construction Management Programs

Whether members want to donate funding or create their own personal legacy in the form of a roofing industry scholarship, the Roofing Alliance provides several opportunities for outstanding roofing professionals to focus on pursuing a four-year degree or obtain specialized certification from a vocational program.

Partnering with Construction Management Programs

The Roofing Alliance is proud to work alongside several of the most distinguished academic institutions that have construction management programs. The objective is to assist these select universities with developing academic curriculum related to roofing and to educate and introduce construction management students to roofing projects and a future in the industry. Along with roofing industry scholarships for outstanding students and faculty, the Roofing Alliance also hosts a national construction management student competition “designed to challenge the students’ roofing knowledge, construction management skills, time management, and organizational and presentation skills.”

The Roofing Alliance is committed to education initiatives that provide insight into the industry and promote lucrative career opportunities for future roofing professionals. Whether it’s bolstering roofing education in construction management programs, providing scholarship opportunities, or hosting networking events that promote a career in roofing, in order to combat the labor shortage issue, we need to recruit the best and brightest.

Membership opportunities with the Roofing Alliance are available to all roofing professionals. For more information on our organization’s objectives or how you can make a commitment to the Roofing Alliance, please contact us today.
