The Roofing Alliance, the Foundation of the National Roofing Contractors Association (NRCA), is committed to several objectives designed to further the roofing industry. This includes several professional roofing development initiatives, such as the Roofing Alliance’s Construction Management Student Competition. This hallmark competition is held annually in the same destination as the NRCA’s Annual Convention and the International Roofing Expo® (IRE).
In parts one and two of this series, we provided an overview of the competition along with the tasks students faced as they progress through the competition. In this final part, we will discuss many of the benefits of a national student competition and how this competition can positively impact the future of the roofing industry.
Construction management programs typically do not focus on providing students with an education specific to roofing. A national competition that is designed for undergraduates to consider the challenges of taking on a roofing project gives the participants firsthand knowledge regarding roofing. Furthermore, the teams obtain a better understanding of the industry as a whole and leave the competition with a newfound respect for roofing projects.
Competing in the Roofing Alliance’s Construction Management Student Competition also provides the students with the opportunity to experience a real-life process of bidding and taking on a project from the perspective of a professional roofing contractor. For example, each team is mentored by professionals from a roofing company that is providing them with insight into the project. They are required to consider issues they would encounter in the field, like risk assessment, material pricing, and how to effectively take on projects. They also have to present their bid to the judges and sell the scope of their project in a professional setting. These are all skills directly related to success in the roofing industry.
A national roofing competition that is held in conjunction with NRCA’s Annual Convention and the IRE provides undergraduate students with the opportunity to be introduced to a myriad of opportunities to establish a career in roofing. Students can interact with commercial and residential contractors, manufacturers, suppliers, engineers, architects, and other roofing professionals that can offer advice and mentorship. This is an outstanding networking opportunity for students that also creates a great deal of positive exposure for the roofing industry.
Competitions are often negatively perceived as a rivalry; however, competitions actually foster many positive attributes, including collaboration and teamwork. Team competitions teach students how to interact with each other in a professional and positive manner and also teaches students how to deal with conflicting opinions. In other words, each team is required to collectively figure out the best course of action to take. Learning these skills is critical for young roofing professionals that will be working on projects with a variety of professionals in other specialized fields.
