6 Roofing Alliance Programs and Partnerships That Give Back to the Community and Advance the Industry Part 1

The Roofing Alliance, the Foundation of the National Roofing Contractors Association (NRCA), is a membership-based organization consisting of roofing contractors, suppliers, manufacturers, and other professionals that are committed to advancing the roofing industry through a variety of initiatives. The members of this national organization are also dedicated to improving their community through several programs, partnerships, and scholarship funding opportunities. In this two-part article, we will cover several of these charitable programs.

1. The Melvin Kruger Endowed Scholarship Program

The Roofing Alliance is committed to addressing the workforce issue in roofing by providing funding for the roofing education and roofing training of professionals in the industry. The Melvin Kruger Endowed Scholarship Program aids employees of members of the NRCA (roofing contractors, manufacturers and suppliers) and their families by providing them with the opportunity to further their roofing education.

Administered by Scholarship America, this scholarship fund provides recipients with the funding they require to pursue a post-secondary educational degree in a specific area of roofing or building construction. The recipient can commit up to four years of time studying at an institution of their choice. Members that provide funding for this initiative have the opportunity to create a personal legacy by establishing a named scholarship. To date, the Roofing Alliance has awarded 120+ students with approximately $800,000 in scholarships.

2. Partnering with Ronald McDonald House Charities

In 2017, the Roofing Alliance partnered with Ronald McDonald House Charities© (RMHC). Members that participate in this partnership committed to inspecting, repairing, and maintaining roofing systems for the 165 stand-alone Ronald McDonald Houses in the U.S. The RMHC© website states: “A Ronald McDonald House provides a place for families to call home so they can stay close to their hospitalized child at little to no cost.” Roofing Alliance members assist these families by managing each home’s roofing system and providing each roof with the necessary materials and maintenance to ensure its longevity.

3. Funding the Future Through Planned Giving

The Roofing Alliance is proud of its tradition of giving back to the community. For members that want to give significant donations that benefit the industry long-term, they can take part in the Roofing Alliance’s Planned Giving Program. There are a variety of giving opportunities for members that provide the Roofing Alliance with the future funding the organization will require to make a difference in the roofing community.

  • Wills: Benevolent members of the Roofing Alliance can dedicate a portion of their personal property assets to the Roofing Alliance and the future of the roofing industry. This is the most common type of planned giving utilized by members.
  • Charitable Lead Trust: For a defined period, a generous donor can provide a profitable asset to share with the Roofing Alliance. After this time period ends, the asset is controlled solely by the donor.
  • Charitable Remainder Trust: Conversely, a charitable remainder trust provides both the donor and the Roofing Alliance with periodic payments. When the terms of the trust cease, the trust is transferred over to the Roofing Alliance.
