Although the global roofing market is expected to grow by 4 percent by 2022, the existing skills gap has slowed the expansion of this vital industry. Strengthening the roofing industry as a whole means starting from the bottom and working upwards. In other words, the roofing industry needs to devise innovative recruiting methods that help boost interest in the industry while providing resources for the roofing professionals of tomorrow to achieve success today.
One example of roofing professionals taking action to advance the industry is The Roofing Alliance, the Foundation of the National Roofing Contractors Association (NRCA). This organization and endowment fund is ardently committed to advancing the roofing industry by funding training initiatives, roofing industry scholarship programs, mentorship opportunities, and more.
In order for the roofing industry to succeed in the future, it will require a skilled workforce of roofing professionals trained in the most effective strategies for not only installing and repairing roofs but staying safe while on the job. Preservation of existing employees is just as important as bringing in new talent, so it’s integral that workers have access to training initiatives to build their skills in accordance with the latest technological advancements and roofing practices. For example, the Roofing Alliance has allocated funding for the development of the NRCA’s ProCertification program. This program helps enhance worker competency with industry-specific training courses and certifications.
Scholarship funding is one of the best ways to build dedicated, highly disciplined workers who have the potential to mold the future of the roofing industry, which is why the Roofing Alliance funds the Melvin Kruger Endowed Scholarship Program. This scholarship helps students pursue a postsecondary degree at an accredited university or vocational program. This allows students to establish a strong foundation for their future, and it also offers these students the opportunity to chase their ambition even further by entering a four-year program related to the roofing and construction industries. This scholarship program has contributed $790,000 in awards to 125 students since it launched.
It’s up to the roofing professionals of today to mentor the roofing professionals of tomorrow at all levels. For new workers in the field, the roofing industry can be intimidating. To those who have never worked in roofing, the idea of working at great heights all day can be unnerving, even scary. Training and mentorship programs streamline the onboarding process and allow new roofing labor to integrate themselves more comfortably into the industry. When workers are expected to show up and start working with little training from a veteran roofing professional, they are more likely to give up on their roofing aspirations permanently. Training and mentorship opportunities that the Roofing Alliance continue to fund are vital to the future success of the roofing industry.
The roofing industry is projected to grow in the near future, but we can’t afford to rely on projections if we want to see real change in the industry. By offering training initiatives, funding roofing industry scholarships, and creating new mentorship opportunities, we can begin to repopulate the dwindling roofing workforce today.
